The Pays d'art et d'histoire Coëvrons-Mayenne (Coëvrons-Mayenne area of art and history) is highlighting the local funerary heritage as part of the Printemps des cimetières (springtime cemeteries) organised by the Patrimoine Aurhalpin federation.
Little known to the general public, the former cemetery of the Mayenne psychiatric hospital is a rare and unique heritage site. Created in 1878, it contains the graves of former patients of the psychiatric hospital whose families have not claimed them, as well as those of members of the nursing staff. This two-part tour, led by a guide and Bruno Lizée, President of the Mayenne Hospital Heritage Association, explores the history of this discreet site, which was active until the 2000s.
