The lake was created in 1975 at the confluence of the Mayenne, Varenne and Colmont rivers. The lake extends over the municipalities of Ambrières-les-Vallées and La Haie Traversaine on the right bank and the left bank on the municipalities of Saint-Loup-du-Gast and Saint-Fraimbault-de-Prières. Renowned for its pike-perch and pike-perch fishing, it is also a favourite with carp anglers, with a spot for night carp fishing.
