Château de Craon, avenue de Champagné, 53400 Craon
A rare plant and architectural heritage.
The Château de Craon is considered to be "the little Versailles of the Mayenne". Its 47 hectares of parkland form a remarkable green setting around this architectural jewel.
Six kilometres of avenues lined with trees over a hundred years old and bordered by the river Oudon take around 1h30 to walk around.
The French garden surrounds the château in perfect symmetry, with the play of water mirrors reflecting the château and the light in an extraordinary way.
The English-style park, planted in 1830, offers a wealth of plant species to admire, as well as numerous vantage points overlooking the château and the far reaches of the park, making for a truly romantic stroll.
The vegetable garden is laid out in squares, with symmetrical paths lined with espaliered trees. The 19th-century greenhouses allow fruit and vegetables to be grown practically all year round. The pumpkins grown here are harvested in autumn and sold at the big autumn festival held every year on the third Sunday in October. The harvested fruit is made into jam, which is served for breakfast to guests at the château.
