Château-Gontier, a thousand-year-old town and one of France's Most Beautiful Detours, charms visitors with its rich heritage. Lose yourself in the maze of narrow streets in the historic town, looking up at the mansions that bear witness to a bourgeoisie enriched by the linen trade. Enter the Faubourg, where the former Ursuline convent, the jewel in the town's crown, awaits you. Stroll through the restored old town centre, from medieval streets to modern squares, from the colours of timber-framed houses to the combination of tufa stone and lime plaster. The sweet fragrance of the flowers will lead you to the gardens of scents, unless you're prepared to go to the Bout du Monde (garden overlooking the river).
Guided tours are available all year round, book in advance at the Tourist Office on 02-43-70-42-74.
The town of Château-Gontier sur Mayenne has also been awarded the "Ville d'accueil des Véhicules d'époque" label.
