Limestone was extracted and lime produced in Saint-Christophe-du-Luat as early as the 13th century.
This site is an emblematic example of the lime kiln industry in the département at the end of the 19th century.
At the same time as being a limestone extraction site, it was also a place where the stone was transformed into lime by firing in the vast kilns that are still on site. During the 17th and 18th centuries, 150 workers toiled in extremely arduous conditions.
The site was renovated in 2024. Guided tour of the exterior by the Evron Heritage Department during the Heritage Days.
