Explore Mayenne on a real‑life treasure hunt!

Do you know Geocaching, the 2.0 treasure hunt? With your smartphone or a GPS, set off in search of hidden ‘caches’ anywhere, anytime in Mayenne—just by opening your Geocaching app.

But how does it work?

Once the app is downloaded, an interactive map appears. On it, numerous pins show you the “caches” hidden nearby by the geocaching community. These caches are small boxes of various sizes, inside which you’ll find treasures as well as a logbook where you can record your visit with your name or username. As for the treasures, the rule is simple: you can take anything you like, as long as you replace it with something else! Just remember: the box itself must not be taken, so that the number of caches remains stable.

Today, there are over 2 million caches worldwide, and in France, the Pays de la Loire region is the second most active area (just behind Rhône‑Alpes), with nearly 30,000 caches recorded! Enough to keep you busy for quite a while… It’s the perfect opportunity to add a fun twist to your walks and, above all, explore the surrounding nature — and maybe even discover something new in a place you thought you knew by heart. Exploration and treasure hunting… needless to say, kids absolutely love it: the perfect argument for getting everyone out on a walk!

And in the Mayenne area?

On the app, our department has several hundred caches: in Laval, Mayenne, Château‑Gontier, and even along the Chemin du Halage… They’re everywhere! You can even create new caches yourself to help the community discover the places you love.

Some of the local Tourist Offices have also created their own routes using dedicated apps such as Baludik and Wivisites (both free).
